Science in the Summer with The Bakken Museum : Be an Engineer! (for ages 7-10)

Science in the Summer with The Bakken Museum : Be an Engineer! (for ages 7-10)

This is a kit-based program that includes a link to a pre-recorded introductory video followed by an optional Livestream session.

This summer, become an engineer! Engineers can do all types of work, but they all have one thing in common: engineers use science to solve problems – and you can, too! As an engineer, you can design new structures or machines, manufacture and test important devices, or construct systems that keep everybody healthy and safe. Engineers are always thinking about protecting people, preserving the planet, and improving life on Earth. That vital work starts at any age, and it can involve even the simplest materials! So, join the team of science-loving problem-solvers and Be an Engineer in this year’s Science in the Summer program from The Bakken Museum.

Each kit will be made available for pick-up starting June 14 and comes with materials for two separate activities that will encourage your child to practice planning and designing skills, use creative problem-solving, notice design issues, and redesign their work. Once you complete the activities you are invited to attend a Livestream session with a Bakken educator on June 18 at 10 AM or June 25 at 10 AM as an opportunity for your child to show their work, share their experience, and see some fun instruction and demonstration.

For ages 7-10. Registration is required. You will receive information about picking up supplies and attending the online program via email.

prerecorded introductory video, take-home kits of materials to interact with, and an opportunity to connect virtually in a livestreamed guided session with a Bakken educator, where students can share their ideas and creations, discuss challenges and obstacles, and have fun while learning from each other.

curriculum is developed for students entering 2nd – 5th grades. Activities will explore a range of concepts and various careers in engineering, but the precise nature of the kit materials is not yet available.

we will schedule a 2-week (12-day) window for this program to take place. On an agreed upon Monday before noon, we will drop off kitted materials to your site(s). The livestream session(s) will be offered on the next two Fridays. Students will be able to play with and perform the activities on their own and then sign in to one of the virtual meetings for some fun with a Bakken educator and to converse and reflect on the activities with others

These 12-day timeframes can be scheduled from Monday, June 14 – Friday, August 20. Livestream sessions, hosted on The Bakken’s private Zoom account, will be made available on Fridays at these times: 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1.p.m., and 2 p.m. We ask that you select the same one preferred time for each of the Friday virtual sessions. These livestream sessions will be designed to be adaptable for a range of 10-30 students. If your library expects few participants, we may opt to condense the virtual meeting into one session rather than two. To get started booking, we ask that you share your most preferred and second most preferred start date/kit drop-off date and livestream hour preference.
