Join us for our Minnesota writers series, Write in Our Midst, with author William Green. Dr. Green will be speaking on his most recent book, Nellie Francis: Fighting for Racial Justice and Women's Equality in Minnesota.. Nellie Francis was an extraordinary black woman from St. Paul who helped lead the suffrage campaign, and after the 1920 lynching of three back men in Duluth successfully lobbied for the enactment of the state's antilynching law.  .

William D. Green is the Anita Gaye Hawthorne Professor of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at Augsburg University. He published A Peculiar Imbalance: The Fall and Rise of Racial Equality in Early Minnesota, Degrees of Freedom: The Origins of Civil Rights in Minnesota, and The Children of Lincoln: White Paternalism and the LImits on Black Opportunity. Degrees of Freedom and The Children of Lincoln won the Hognander-Minnesota Book Awards, 2016 and 2020, respectively.
