Portrait of William Hays, creator of the Motion Picture Production Code

Exploring the Arts with Steve Schroer: Public Morality and the Production Code

From the early 1930s to the late 1960s, the Motion Picture Production Code placed restrictions on the content of American movies. In the interest of public morality, no sympathetic or even neutral portrayal of “immoral” behavior was to be permitted. This talk will examine the impact of the Code, with many anecdotes about the behind-the-scenes battles that shaped classic films.
