Exploring the Arts: Screwball Comedy

Exploring the Arts: Screwball Comedy

In the 1930s, Hollywood gave birth to a new type of romantic comedy.  Screwball was a “battle of the sexes,” and some have called it the most feminist film genre because of its strong-willed female leads. It also gave Depression-era audiences a way to think about social class. In this presentation and conversation, we will attempt to define screwball comedy, situate it in American history, and consider the canonical films of the genre.
