Plants Insects and Printmaking: The Art of Maria Sibylla Marian

Plants Insects and Printmaking: The Art of Maria Sibylla Marian

In this program at Hardwood Creek Library we will make art, learn about art history, and become amateur biologists as we create prints in the style of Maria Sibylla Marian. Maria was a German scientist and printmaker who was famous for her exquisitely detailed scientific illustrations of insects and plants. Participants will learn about her work and the continued importance of scientific illustration - even in modern times. We will use plexiglass plates to engrave plant and insect illustrations of our own. Then we will ink, clean, and print our plates. No previous printing experience is necessary.

This program is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
